Yasny Launch Baseis a new Russian space launch base dedicated to SS18 / Dnepr Launch Vehicles. The first Dnepr launch from Yasny was conducted here on 12th of July, 2006. Geographical Locationof Yasny Launch Base is about 120km west of Orsk city, Orenburg Region, Russia, near Kazakhstan.
TransportationNearest airport is Orsk International Airport. A regular flight between Moscow and Orsk is available everyday except Sunday. There are cows and cowboys here. Some American visitor had an impression that the countryside looks like that of North Dakota.The way from Orsk to Yasny is about 120km. Half of the way is not paved, and even paved roads are not as flat as those in Moscow. Unlike Baikonur, railway is not connected to the satellite processing facility.Orsk Airport has a coffee shop and a toilet in the airport building.Orsk Airport can accommodate large cargo planes including An124. Immigrations and customs clearance can be made here. Arrived satellites and GSE containers are off-loaded here and transported to the satellite processing facility in Yasny by road.

The satellite processing facility is connected to Hotel Yasny Kosmotras by a corridor, which makes it easy to work 24 hours a day by three shifts.Air Shower to Clean Room2006 -07 (C) Seiji YoshimotoRed Machine: Special lift provides access to any place of the satellite processing facility.Satellite Processing FacilityISC Kosmotras built a new own satellite processing facility (AITB) at a place about 2km from Yasny city. A class 100,000 clean room was used for processing Genesis1 spacecraft of Bigelow Aerospace in the US. Another clean room with class 30,000 is used for satellites with optical payloads. Fueling facility is also class 30,000.
Class 100,000 Clean RoomThe newly built class 100,000 clean room is very clean with careful design of air flow and filtering. (30,000 actually measured.) Unlike Baikonur facility no insects are flying. The illumination is sufficient (much stronger than that of Baikonur facility) and has natural color (no sodium lights are used). The size of the clean room is 18m (width), 18m (depth), and 17m (height). It has a 10t crane. Unloading and storage area of satellite processing facility is equipped with a 10 t crane. AccommodationsISC Kosmotras built a new western standard hotel "Hotel Yasny Kosmotras" at a quiet place about 2km from Yasny city. All foreign visitors stay in the hotel. The hotel provides visitors with air-conditioned clean and comfortable guest rooms, meals, office rooms, and recreation facility.
Interior of the hotel and rooms are carefully designed so that foreign visitors can relax and enjoy their long stay for their launch campaigns. The Hotel is connected to Satellite Processing Facility (AITB) by corridor. Kitchen is modern and clean with latest equipment such as a large electric oven.Hotel is equipped with latest laundry machines. Hotel guests can use a coin laundry machine.Sometimes recreation culture programs are performed in cooperation with Yasny city .Communications from / to outside of Yasny Launch Base is provided via satellite. Yasny City: Residential AreaThe residential area near the launch base is a city of Yasny with a population of about 20,000 people. Yasny is a closed city, and foreign visitors need special security clearance and escort to visit the city. Like other closed cities in Russia, Yasny keeps neat and quiet traditional atmosphere. The city has super markets, several stores, including computer shops, a movie theatre, coffee shops, a disco and medical facilities. (The disco opens only in the evenings of Friday and Saturday.) Most payments are made by cash. A few ATMs are available for cash withdrawal.  Various different kinds of food and everyday goods are sold here.Yasny is near Kazakhstan, and about half of the inhabitants are Kazakh. |
